A Child Advocacy Center (CAC) brings together professionals and agencies to coordinate their work as they respond to a report of child maltreatment. Wisconsin currently has nine child advocacy centers serving Wisconsin children.
The center organizes a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) and employs special techniques to investigate allegations of child maltreatment.
The team proceeds with the best interests of the child in mind, providing assistance and protection without causing further harm. It keeps its primary focus on the child, maintains a single location having an atmosphere comfortable for the child, and uses forensic interviewers trained to respond to the needs of children.
Professionals and volunteers joined forces in 1985 to form the first such Child Advocacy Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Now hundreds of such centers exist across the United States. The Wisconsin Chapter is a member of the National Children's Alliance and is served by the Midwest Regional Center.
The mission Child Advocacy Centers of WI is to educate the public about the important role child advocacy centers play in protecting the children of Wisconsin, and to act as a resource for emerging CACs and MDTs.
